Jet-Set Smart: Your Ultimate Travel Prep Guide
Stay Powered Up: Tech Basics
Voltage Check: U.S. uses 110V; Europe uses 240V. Most devices (phones, laptops) have built-in converters. You only need an adaptor for the French plug.
High-Wattage Devices: Bring a voltage converter for blow dryers or flat irons. Using a hair dryer without a converter can cause it to overheat, malfunction, or even start an electrical fire. It may also permanently damage the hair dryer. All of our apartments, villas, and Paris hotels come furnished with hair dryers for your convenience.
Portable Power Bank: Good for keeping your devices powered up when out and about. Power banks with lithium batteries should not be packed in checked luggage. Instead, bring them in your carry-on due to safety regulations and fire hazard concerns.
Money Matters:
Credit cards are great for shopping but mind the 1-3% foreign fees. Notify banks of travel, and know daily limits. Prefer Visa/Mastercard; AmEx is rarely accepted.
Debit cards are best for ATM cash – just need a 4-digit PIN. Use for best exchange rates; avoid airport ATMs.
Cash: Bring small denominations (€20, €50). Avoid €500 notes.
Apple Pay: Set up Apple Pay on your iPhone and Apple Watch for easy public transportation payments. Tap your device at contactless readers to pay for your ride. Karen will text you an Apple Cash Card for your Paris trip—public transport is included in your trip price.
Safety First:
Pickpockets: Be cautious at metro stations and tourist spots.
Secure Bags: Use zipped purses and keep wallets in front pockets.
Minimal Cash: Use a money belt for larger bills and leave valuables in the hotel/Airbnb.
Stay Connected: Your Travel Communication Toolkit
Your Mobile Provider
International Plans: I recommend getting one from your service provider. If you opt out of an international travel plan, disable cellular data before landing in France to avoid high roaming fees.
To disable cellular data on iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular > toggle Cellular Data off.
Free Talk Apps
WhatsApp: Free messaging and calling (WiFi only). Before the trip, you'll receive a text invite to download WhatsApp and join the Paris 2024 or Provence 2024 group. This will be the preferred way to communicate with me on the trip.
iMessage/FaceTime: Free messaging and calling (WiFi only) between Apple devices. To turn on iMessage, go to Settings > Messages > toggle iMessage on.
eSIM & SIM Cards
France eSIM/SIM Card: A local SIM or eSIM allows you to activate a talk, text, and data plan with a French carrier, offering unlimited data at much lower prices than international plans, ideal for stays of 10+ days.
eSIM Card Compatibility: For newer phones with embedded SIMs. Purchase a few days before departure due to short activation periods. Create an account with Orange Travel for service.
How do I know if I have a SIM already embedded in my phone? On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular. If "SIM" or "Delete SIM" appears, you have one. "Add eSIM" is where you’ll enter eSIM info.
SIM Card: For older phones with removable SIMs. Consider buying a French SIM for local rates. Available for purchase before travel or in France. Recommended to purchase before travel.
